Town Government

Falmouth’s municipal committees were active this week, with several boards releasing agendas and minutes, and progressing on key town initiatives. The Finance Committee met on March 11 to continue its comprehensive review of the Fiscal Year 2027 budget. Chaired by Eleanor Vance, the committee delved into various segments, including the combined operating budget, the Capital Improvement Plan, Tax Increment Financing combined budgets, special revenue budgets, and the wastewater operations, maintenance, and CIP budget. These documents, crucial for the town's financial planning, were made available in advance of the meeting (FY27 Budget Book 1, Operating Budgets).

The Community Development Committee also convened on March 11, under the leadership of Michael Grant, to address two significant local development projects. The committee discussed proposed amendments to the Village Center Commercial district zoning for the Legion Fields area, aiming to refine development guidelines. Additionally, the CDC reviewed detailed plans for a new snack shack and parks garage facility, referencing a Town Council resolution from December 2025 and a background memo prepared by Town Planner Emily White. The plans included updated designs dated February 25, 2026 (Legion Fields VCC Amendment Draft, Snack Shack Parks Garage Background Memo).

The Board of Zoning Appeals released its meeting packet and agenda for a session scheduled for March 24, highlighting an upcoming public hearing for a variance request. Homeowner Sarah Jenkins is seeking a variance for her property at 76 Waits Landing Road to permit an addition that encroaches into the required setback. The application materials, including abutter lists and detailed site plans, were published this week to inform the public and abutters (76 Waites Landing Road Application, U05-002). Draft minutes from the BZA's January 27 meeting were also made public.

Conservation efforts continued to be a focus, with the Conservation Commission, chaired by Sarah Thompson, publishing draft minutes from its March 2 meeting. The commission also released a draft memo outlining its Plastics Reduction Initiative, complete with a mission statement and an action plan that incorporated comments from previous discussions (Plastics Reduction Initiative Memo, Draft 1.9.24). This initiative aims to address plastic waste within the community. Separately, the Planning Board released minutes from its February 3 meeting, which included deliberations on a minor subdivision application for the Evergreen Woods development off Middle Road. The Long-Range Planning Advisory Committee's agenda for its upcoming March 18 meeting was also published, indicating continued work on the town's comprehensive plan.

Schools

The Falmouth School Board did not hold a regular meeting this week, but administrators continued preparations for the upcoming budget season. Preliminary discussions among subcommittees focused on capital improvements for school facilities and potential adjustments to student programming for the next academic year. The school district's athletic department announced tryouts for spring sports, including baseball, softball, and track and field, scheduled to begin in late March.

The Falmouth Police Department reported a moderate call volume for the week of March 8-14, responding to 78 incidents. On Wednesday, March 12, officers responded to a noise complaint from residents on Lookout Point Road regarding a late-night gathering.
