City Government
The Pocatello City Council convened on June 17, 2026, addressing several key municipal issues. Discussions centered on the future use of the city-owned former Fire Station No. 2 property at 540 S. 2nd Avenue. Council members reviewed proposals ranging from a dedicated community arts center to a technology incubator space. City Manager Robert Jensen indicated that a decision on the property's long-term utilization is expected by late summer, following further public input sessions. The council also continued its review of potential updates to city zoning regulations, focusing on mixed-use development standards in the Old Town area, aiming to foster economic vitality while maintaining neighborhood character (City Council Agenda, June 17, 2026).
Separately, the Pocatello Planning & Zoning Commission held a public hearing on June 16 concerning multiple land use changes. A significant item on the agenda was a rezone request from Portneuf Development Group LLC for a 2.5-acre parcel at 1230 Bench Road, seeking to change it from Residential-2 zoning to Commercial-General zoning to allow for a new retail complex. Residents such as Ms. Eleanor Vance, who lives adjacent to the proposed site, voiced concerns regarding increased traffic and noise during the hearing. The commission voted to recommend approval of the rezone, contingent on a traffic impact study and a detailed landscaping plan, forwarding the recommendation to the City Council for final approval (Planning & Zoning Commission Agenda, June 16, 2026).
Meanwhile, the Pocatello Hearing Examiner, Sarah Jenkins, reviewed a conditional use permit application from School District 25 on June 15. The district seeks to install an Electronic Messaging Center sign at Pocatello High School, located at 325 N. Arthur Avenue, to enhance communication with students, parents, and the community regarding events and announcements. After reviewing testimony and site plans, Jenkins approved the permit with conditions, including restrictions on message brightness and display hours to minimize impact on nearby residences. The Pocatello Historic Preservation Commission also met on June 14, continuing discussions on the city's nomination for American World War II Heritage City status. Chair Martha Chen noted progress on compiling historical documentation and oral histories, with a target submission date in early fall (Historic Preservation Commission Minutes, June 14, 2026).
Schools
Pocatello School District 25 was active this week, primarily through its application for an Electronic Messaging Center at Pocatello High School. The conditional use permit, reviewed and approved by the city's Hearing Examiner, allows the district to proceed with plans for a new digital sign at the high school, located at 325 N. Arthur Avenue. This sign is intended to improve communication of school events, sports schedules, and important announcements to the community. District Superintendent Dr. Alan Peterson stated that the sign represents a step forward in modernizing school communication and will be a valuable asset for the entire school community.
