City Government
Pocatello's City Council convened on March 31, addressing several key municipal issues. Council members discussed the future utilization of the city-owned property at the old Firehouse No. 3 on Main Street. Options presented by City Planner Eleanor Vance included a public-private partnership for mixed-use development or a direct sale for commercial redevelopment, with the council requesting further financial analysis for both scenarios (March 31 City Council Agenda). Additionally, the council reviewed proposed updates to city zoning regulations, focusing on streamlining the permitting process for small businesses and addressing infill development standards. Council President Maria Rodriguez emphasized the need for clear guidelines to support local economic growth.
Simultaneously, the Planning & Zoning Commission held a public hearing on March 28 regarding a rezone request for a 15-acre parcel located near the Interstate 15 and Interstate 86 junction. Applicant Acme Corp. sought to rezone the land from Agricultural to Light Industrial to facilitate the construction of a new logistics facility. After hearing testimony from nearby residents concerning potential traffic impacts and noise, the commission voted 5-2 to recommend approval to the City Council, citing the economic development potential and proximity to major transportation arteries (March 28 Planning & Zoning Minutes).
Separately, the Pocatello Hearing Examiner met on March 27 to consider a conditional use permit application from School District 25. The district requested approval to replace an existing static pole sign at Pocatello High School, 325 N. Arthur Ave., with an Electronic Message Center sign. Following a brief presentation by the district's facilities director, John Davis, and no public opposition, the examiner granted the permit with conditions relating to sign brightness and operating hours to minimize impact on adjacent residential areas (March 27 Hearing Examiner Decision).
The Historic Preservation Commission held its monthly meeting on March 29, continuing discussions on the proposed WWII Heritage Trail project. The commission reviewed preliminary designs for interpretive signage and potential historical markers at various sites around the city. Commissioner Sarah Jensen highlighted the importance of securing grant funding for the initiative, noting that a grant application to the Idaho State Historical Society is due in late April. The commission also reviewed the latest Material Claims Report, which included a payment of $7,500 to Preservation Partners for architectural consulting services related to the historic district survey (March 29 Historic Preservation Commission Agenda).
Schools
Pocatello School District 25's Board of Trustees met on March 30, focusing on the district's capital improvement plan for the upcoming fiscal year. Superintendent Dr. Evelyn Reed presented an overview of facility maintenance priorities, including roof replacements at Highland High School and Hawthorne Middle School. The board approved a preliminary budget allocation of $1.2 million for these projects, contingent on the finalization of state funding. The meeting also included a presentation on student athletic achievements, recognizing the Pocatello High School girls' basketball team for their recent district championship win.
Police
The Pocatello Police Department reported a total of 385 calls for service during the past week. Incidents included 11 motor vehicle accidents, 25 reports of theft, and 15 noise complaints. On March 29, officers responded to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Yellowstone Avenue and Alameda Road. The incident, involving a sedan and an SUV, resulted in minor injuries to one driver and significant traffic delays for approximately an hour. Additionally, on April 1, officers arrested a 34-year-old male on suspicion of shoplifting at a retail store on Pole Line Road after he allegedly attempted to leave with over $300 worth of merchandise.
Fire & EMS
The Pocatello Fire Department and EMS responded to 92 calls for service this week, including 68 medical emergencies, 12 fire alarms, and 4 structure fires. On March 27, crews responded to a kitchen fire at a residence on Bannock Street. Firefighters quickly contained the blaze to the kitchen area, preventing further spread, though the room sustained moderate damage. No injuries were reported, and the cause was determined to be unattended cooking. On March 30, Pocatello EMS provided mutual aid to Chubbuck Fire Department for a multi-vehicle accident on US-30, transporting two individuals with moderate injuries to Portneuf Medical Center.
