Town Government

The Brunswick Town Council, during its meeting on June 20, advanced discussions on the disposition of the former Hawthorne School property. Town Manager Sarah Chen presented an update on the Request for Proposals (RFP) process, noting that three bids were received. The council reviewed a proposal from Brunswick Revitalization Group for a mixed-use development, including affordable housing units and commercial space, totaling an estimated $2.5 million investment. Council Chair David Miller emphasized the importance of community benefit in the final decision. The council voted 6-1 to move forward with negotiations exclusively with Brunswick Revitalization Group, contingent on a detailed financial review by the Finance Committee (June 20 Agenda Packet).

Separately, the Staff Review Committee convened on June 21 to evaluate several key development and infrastructure projects. Planning Director Mark Riley led the review of a proposed shoreland stabilization project along the Androscoggin River near Water Street, aimed at mitigating erosion and improving public access. The committee requested additional environmental impact assessments from the project applicant, Coastal Engineering Solutions. Discussions also included preliminary designs for a new multi-use path connecting the Brunswick Landing area to the downtown corridor, with an estimated cost of $850,000, anticipated to be partially funded through a federal grant (Staff Review Committee June 21 Document).

On June 24, the Brunswick Planning Board held a workshop to continue its review of the Thomas Point Campground III expansion and the Wilbur's Woods II residential development. For Thomas Point Campground III, the board considered revised plans addressing stormwater management and increased buffer zones following public feedback. Developer Green Acres Properties presented updated hydrological studies. The board granted conditional approval, pending final engineering sign-off. The Wilbur's Woods II proposal, which involves 25 new single-family homes, was tabled until the July meeting to allow the developer, Pine Ridge Homes, to address concerns about traffic impact and open space dedication raised by residents of nearby Maple Street (Planning Board June 24 Agenda).

Schools

The Brunswick School Board met on June 22 to review preliminary budget figures for the Fiscal Year 2027 capital improvement plan. Superintendent Jane Thompson presented a proposal for roof repairs at Brunswick High School, estimated at $1.2 million, and upgrades to the heating ventilation and air conditioning system at Harriet Beecher Stowe Elementary School, projected at $850,000. Board members discussed potential funding sources, including state subsidies and local bond referendums. The board also received an update on summer enrichment programs, reporting strong enrollment across various academic and recreational activities for students from kindergarten through eighth grade.

Police

Brunswick Police Department responded to 168 calls for service between June 19 and June 25. On June 20, officers responded to a report of a motor vehicle accident involving two cars at the intersection of Maine Street and Pleasant Street at approximately 3:45 p.m. Minor injuries were reported, and both vehicles required towing. On June 23, a theft was reported at a business on Tibbetts Drive, where security footage showed an individual taking merchandise valued at approximately $200. The incident remains under investigation. Additionally, on June 25, police addressed a noise complaint originating from a residence on Federal Street at 11:30 p.m., resulting in a warning issued to the occupants.

Fire & EMS

The Brunswick Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services responded to 37 calls for service during the week. This included 28 EMS calls, 5 fire alarms, and 4 service calls. On June 21, crews responded to a brush fire reported near the Brunswick Executive Airport at 1:15 p.m. The small fire, believed to have started from discarded smoking materials, was quickly contained and extinguished with no structural damage. On June 24, Brunswick EMS provided mutual aid to the town of Topsham for a medical emergency, transporting a patient to Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Real Estate

Several property transactions were recorded in the Cumberland County Registry of Deeds this week. On June 20, 14 Pleasant Street, a three-bedroom, two-bathroom colonial home built in 1920, sold for $485,000. On June 22, a commercial condominium unit at 100 Pegasus Street within Brunswick Landing, comprising 1,500 square feet of office space, was purchased for $320,000. Additionally, on June 24, 7 Willow Street, a two-bedroom ranch-style home, changed hands for $375,000, and a vacant residential lot at 5 Riverbend Road sold for $175,000 on June 25.
