City Government
Geneva’s city government engaged in a range of discussions and approvals this past week, with particular attention paid to infrastructure and financial oversight. The Committee of the Whole met on Monday, March 24, where aldermen reviewed proposed revisions to the city’s stormwater management ordinance. Director of Public Works Sarah Miller presented several options for updating current regulations, citing increased regional focus on impervious surface runoff and flood control (March 24 Committee of the Whole Agenda Packet). The committee deliberated on potential impacts to residential and commercial developers, with Alderman Robert Davis emphasizing the need for a balanced approach that protects the Fox River watershed without unduly burdening property owners. A recommendation for a revised ordinance is expected to move to the City Council next month.
The City Council convened on Wednesday, March 26, approving the latest Accounts Payable Invoice Report totaling $347,890. This sum included payments to various vendors, notably $45,200 to Geneva Electric Company for substation maintenance and $28,150 to Kane County Paving for street repair materials (March 26 City Council Meeting Minutes). City Administrator Michael Chen also reported on the status of several capital improvement projects, including progress on the new city hall facade renovation, which remains on schedule for a late summer completion. The council also formally approved a new three-year contract with Waste Management for residential refuse and recycling services, valued at approximately $1.2 million annually, following a recommendation from the Public Works Department (Approved Vendor Contracts, 2026-03-26).
Separately, the Plan Commission held a public hearing on Tuesday, March 25, regarding a proposed mixed-use development at 100 West State Street. Developer Sterling Properties presented plans for a three-story building combining ground-floor retail with residential units above, seeking a special use permit for increased density. Residents raised concerns about parking availability and traffic flow in the historic downtown area. The commission voted to table the decision, requesting further studies on traffic impact and parking solutions (Plan Commission Agendas & Minutes, March 25). Meanwhile, the Historic Preservation Commission met on Thursday, March 27, to review a certificate of appropriateness application for exterior modifications to the historic Baker House at 310 South Third Street. The commission approved the application with conditions, requiring specific window materials to maintain architectural integrity.
