Augusta City Council convened on Thursday, March 25, addressing several key municipal initiatives. City Manager Sarah Chen presented an overview of the ongoing comprehensive plan update, noting public feedback sessions are scheduled for April. Councilors discussed a proposed ordinance to implement enhanced energy efficiency codes for new commercial construction, drawing on recent regulatory trends observed in 62 other municipalities (March 25 City Council Agenda Packet). Earlier in the week, the Planning Board met on Monday, March 22, to review a site plan application from Kennebec Riverfront Development LLC for a mixed-use project at 125 Water Street. City Engineer David Lee provided technical analysis, recommending several modifications to the proposed retention pond system. The board voted 5-2 to conditionally approve the plan, pending final engineering review and a revised landscaping scheme (Site Plan Application #2026-03-125).

While no formal action was taken, Councilor Elena Petrova requested a public workshop to gather resident input on environmental and health considerations. Additionally, the Public Safety Committee, chaired by Councilor John Miller, presented an informational report on existing marijuana regulation, recommending a review of current zoning for cannabis retail establishments in light of evolving state laws. The City Council will revisit these matters at their next meeting.
